Personal Care in Wilton Manors

Bathing, dressing, the bathroom and safe transfers, done by somebody who does it every day and does not make an occasion of it.

The job families try hardest to keep doing themselves

Almost everybody tries. A daughter decides she can manage her mother's shower. A husband in his eighties decides he can still get his wife onto the toilet. Both are usually wrong, and the cost of finding out is a pulled back, a fall, or a relationship that has quietly turned into a care rota.

Handing this one task to an aide buys back more than the time it takes. The thirty minutes that caused the row stop being a family matter. What is left — the coffee afterwards, the conversation, the actual visit — goes back to being what it was.

Personal care is the service families add first and the one that changes the atmosphere in a house fastest.

What is in it

Set out in the plan before the first shift, and adjusted whenever the level of help changes.

Washing

A shower where that is safe, a strip wash or bed bath where it is not, with the room prepared before anyone undresses.

Dressing and grooming

Clothes layered in whatever sequence a stiff shoulder or a puffy ankle allows; hair, shaving, oral care.

The bathroom

Timed prompting, help getting on and off, and continence care handled quietly and without an audience.

Moving safely

Bed to chair, chair to walker, chair to car — proper technique and proper equipment, never a pull on the arm.

Skin

Daily checks on heels, hips and elbows, because pressure damage starts long before anybody complains.

Already overdue if

  • The same outfit has been on for three days
  • Bruises are appearing on the upper arms
  • The bathroom door stays shut and the shower stays dry
  • A heel or the base of the spine has started to break down
  • Somebody in the family has hurt their own back doing this

Most families start with the mornings

One visit a day, five days a week, is where this usually begins. Call and we will work out what that would cost for your week.
